Orangutan Sanctuary

Melbourne, AU

Designed as three interconnected exhibits, one enclosed in mesh, one indoor two story dayroom, and the other open air habitat; visitors are introduced to the interactive animal enrichment programs conducted at the zoo and at orangutan rehabilitation centers in Borneo and Kalamantan.

Animal care staff work with the ‘orangs’ and gibbons throughout the day at three training walls, and in the indoor three story day room. All animal habitats are densely furnished with vertical climbing elements, soft day beds, and ‘sway poles’ that replicate the animals natural locomotion methods.
